This contract for the complete mechanical, electrical and ICA works associated with the replacement and upgrade of the headworks at Fillyside was awarded by East of Scotland Water in May 2000. The purpose of the ?1.1 million scheme was to provide new pumping and screening facilities for the combined storm overflow to protect the water quality and amenities at Portobello beach.

A 25m?/h washwater system complete with 12m? header tank was installed to provide process water for screen spray bars, screenings launder trough motive washing, screenings washer spraybars, pump bearing flushing water, odour control system irrigation and general washdown facilities.

New screenings handling equipment capable of processing up to 12.7m?/h of wet screenings was installed including washing, dewatering, compaction and skip loading via movable screw conveyor.


Fillyside Headworks

Two weighing platforms were installed to allow monitoring of skip contents and instigate automatic changeover when full. A 3.5 tonne crane was provided for maintenance purposes.

The SEPA Consent to Discharge storm water via a marine outfall required screening of solids to 6mm. Two dual-speed bandscreens working on a duty/assist basis were installed to handle flows up to 9.0m?/s.

A new MCC of form 4 construction to IP55 of BS EN 60947-1 1992 was installed incorporating automatic mains/generator changeover, equipment starters and common control section housing the PLC, instrumentation and telemetry outstation. A SCADA system was linked to the PLC that allows display of digital and analogue information on mimics and dynamic trending of process parameters.

The odour control system is of the peat bed type and includes irrigation system and all necessary ductwork to serve the pump wet well, two screen chambers and two outfall tunnels.

A new 380 kVA diesel-powered standby generator was installed within its own weather-proof acoustic enclosure providing sound attenuation to 55 dBA. The plant included a bunded oil storage tank to provide 24 hours running time.

Two immersible, close-coupled dry weather flow pumps were provided to pump a maximum flow of 400 l/s from the headworks wet well via a rising main to the Seafield Wastewater Treatment works. Additionally, two immersible close-coupled storm pumps were installed to pump a maximum of 1000 l/s from the headworks wet well into the adjacent Niddrie-Seafield sewer and via the new screens to the existing outfall.
